How long do I have to file a hail claim on my car in Minnesota?

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Had hail damage done last year. Is there a deadline to file an insurance claim in Minnesota?

When you report your claim, be very clear about the date and location of your vehicle during the hail, so the company can check weather records and verify your claim. It’s usually a good idea to file a hail claim as soon as possible so that your claim can be proved.

Has anyone else had trouble with State Farm Insurance paying for claims?

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Our area was hit by two hail storms this year, one in June and the other in August. Several roofs in our community has sustained hail damage. As a Contractor it has made us very busy replacing roofs. I have noticed a pattern - specifically with State Farm Insurance Adjusters denying their customers claims when other insurance companys pay for damages. There is no question iState Farm is denying paying claims when they should be paying them, and by far is the worst most deceptive company I have observed. Has anyone else had issues with State Farm Insurance?

Sure, with ANY insurance company, you’re going to have complaints.

However.

By a WIDE margin, State Farm insures more homes in the United States than ANY other insurance company. Also, they have the absolutely LOWEST ratio, of upheld insurance complaints, combined, with all the state insurance commissioners (from AM Best’s Review).

So sure, if you have 100 houses in a neighborhood, and 98 of them are insured with State Farm, one with Nationwide, one with Allstate, and ONE of those claims gets denied, it’s most likely going to be the State Farm one. But, if it’s denied because they ALREADY paid for the roof in June, and the homeowner didn’t replace it, well, that’s VALID.

So . . . you have to look deeper, if you want a FAIR answer to that. OH, and I am not now, and never have been, a State Farm agent. But my personal homeowners insurance, IS with State Farm - and that should tell you something.

What’s the best way to win an argument with your auto insurance company when they are unwilling to cooperate?

I currently have a collision claim that involves a damaged hood that needs to be replaced. They are trying to tell me that since I took a hail damage claim a few years ago that included the hood that they will not replace the hood this time. I thought the reason that I pay collision AND comprehensive damage insurance was to make sure I was covered in either case, regardless of whether both happened during my ownership of the vehicle. What’s even more fishy is that the person dealing with my case at the collision repair shop asked me if I had a hail claim about a year ago and it was more like five years ago. Whether or not the insurance company cut me a check for the hail damage claim five years ago, aren’t they just trying to cheat me on this collision claim? I’m ticked, and I just wondered if anybody had any professional advice on the matter. Thanks all.
I’m not denying that I did not have the prior hail damage repaired, I’m just troubled by the fact that I have been a loyal customer for my entire driving life and that this hail claim was 5 years ago. I live in a region that gets frequent hail during the spring storm season and in fact, we got nailed with two pretty nasty ones in just the past week. I realize what the insurance company is saying and I realize I don’t have much of a leg to stand on in a technical sense. But where does an insurance company decide to show a little good faith to a lifelong customer and meet somewhere in the middle. I realize that I may be fighting a losing battle, but I would just like to see my insurance company live up to its slogan and be there like a good neighbor.

Did you have the hail damage repaired? If yes, then you should be able to show the insurance company that the damage was repaired. If the damage was repaired - then the hail damage claim has no bearing on this loss.

However, given the way your question is asked….I suspect you pocketed the money and did not have the repairs done.

In which case, the insurance company does not owe to re-repair the damage.

Frequently in hail damage to hood claims you have to replace the hood. If the insurance company wrote an estimate to replace the hood b/c of the hail damage and you did not replace the hood—-they do not owe you another hood. You can not get paid twice to replace the same hood.

If they did not write to replace the hood b/c of the hail damage - rather did a paintless repair….then what they should do is write an estimate for the total cost to do the repairs from this accident and subtract the total cost of the repairs from the prior accident that you did not have done - subtract your deductible and pay you the difference.

The math would look like this: this damage - prior damage - deductible = amount paid.

The insurance company is not trying to trick you.

Rather is sounds like you are trying to trick them and collect twice for the hood.

The issue is not the insurance company cutting you a check for the prior damage. The issue is that you did not have the hail damage repaired.

is it legal for insurance companys to hold part of the claim money?

Friday, October 16th, 2009

when my home was damaged by hail, the adjuster looked and made out the check. subtracted the deductible and also withheld about a third of the money. the adjuster said that i must meet a mark on the total cost of the repairs before i can receive the rest of the money. my home is payed for. in the past when i have had to make claims this was not the case. i have had the same company for 30 years, under the same policy.

When you signed the policy, all stipulations to that was in that document. Find that document and review it. If it states that they can withhold the money, they can. This differs from company to company so just check the document.

I rented a car while my car was being fixed when I took it back they claim hail damage was no hail?

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

I had the car for three weeks when I took it back she said there was hail damage it is literally one spot the size of a pencil mark she had to touch it so I would even see it. They want to file a claim against my insurance I pulled up the weather there was no hail in Sept what do I do?

Let them file. They don’t have a chance. Send the weather report you pulled up from your computer, along with the link where you found it, to your insurance company. If that does not work, contact an Attorney, take them to court suing them for the Attorney fees and court fees, that will either shut them up, or cost them a lot of money. Making you the winner.

car insurance claims?

Friday, September 25th, 2009

I’ve always had car insurance but recent;y bought a new car (one month ago). Today I saw a weather report that a big storm was heading our way with hail so I got online and decreased by non-collision deductible to 100 from 500. This was able one hour before the storm hit. The hail damage on my car in bad, not horrible but bad. I’m afraid that the insurance company will not want to cover the damage with the 100 deductible. Anyone have any experience or knowledge to share.

Insurance carriers know when someone is trying to defraud the company…they know that weather reports are available to everyone and are particularly suspicious when they get an influx of requests for a change in deductibles so close to when a known storm hits. It is quite possible they will deny your claim. Not only that, this is cause for them to cancel your policy, so be careful!

Will insurance total out my car?

Sunday, September 13th, 2009

When insurance companies figure out what your car is worth..do they go by the private sale value or retail? I got a bunch of hail damage and I see the claims dept. tomorrow..just wondering if they might total it out. Damage is just over $6,000…car is worth $6,500 - $8,700 depending on which way they look at it.

they will, they will pay 25% less than the lesser number. have the insurance co. write the estimate (they will write it lower ) then let the body shop collect the differance. they will write a supplimental bill and you will get your car fixed.
