Insurance Question?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I have recently received my house& contents renewal, to my horror they had me done as making three claims ?? upon investigation, 1 claim I agree with, the other two are as follows.

No 2. I claimed on my holiday insurance when my case was broken into.(nothing to do with house & contents ins)

No3. WAIT for it !! I rang my insurance company following storm Damage to my property, I was not able to claim because the wind
that day was not HIGH enough to cause damage. !! My Insurance company are saying, This is classed as a claim !!! although they did not go the loser. I paid to have my property repaired.

Does anybody know what I can do to get my insurance company to take claims 2 & 3 off my records. It does seem so unfair.

As a Broker I know it can be very frustrating dealing with insurance companies. I suspect the second claim is on your record because your travel insurers have recovered some of the money they have paid out from your household insurers, unfortunately they are entitled to do this.

With regards to the 3 claim this shouldn’t really be on your record if they have not made any payments. I would ask your broker to sort it out or send a letter to the claims manager at the insurance company.

Has anyone fought their home insurance company over a claim?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I have been told by a contractor I have hail damage on my roof, my insurance company denies it and won’t cover me. I have been with them for 25 years, the contractor wants to meet with the adjustor at my home to discuss this but they say no, what should I do?

I’ve fought claims on behalf of my clients and won. Not something like a replacement roof, however.

I would call another contractor, tell him, hey, you’re NOT going to get this job, but I’ll pay you $100 if you give me your written opinion, honestly.

Because contractors are GOING to try to tell you your roof is bad - it’s in their interest to sell you a new roof. Big question here - how OLD is your roof, and how much life do you have left in it?

See, hail damage is going to leave VISIBLE traces - sure, they might be small, but you should see SOMETHING - on siding, flashing, and asphalt shingles or tin, whatever your roof is made of. So how hard would it be to have a contractor take a picture of the damage they say is hail?? Then bring it to your AGENT, and let your AGENT fight that battle.

Vented ridge cap neccessary?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

I am replacing an existing standing seam roof with a new one due to wind damage. One contractor has been fairly firm that I should have a vented ridge cap added to the new roof. I currently have gable end vents with the styrofoam rafter vents and have had no problems. Any suggestions that the ridge vent is neccessary?

The more airflow the better. With vented ridge caps, you have airflow all the way from the soffit to the ridge. I would highly recommend it!

how do i determine if my asphalt shingle roof has been damaged by hail?

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Call your insurance agent and they will have it inspected to see if there is damage enough to have it replaced by your insurance coverage. My sister’s entire neighborhood in Indy was recently damaged by the hail storm and they ended up getting new roofs - the entire neighborhood. Her RV was damaged beyond belief. Insurance even replaced that.

is condo assoc. liable for interior water damage due to outside roof leak?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

i own my condo. there was a leak in the roof and water from the outside had damaged some of the drywall (ceiling and wall) inside my condo as the water trickled through. since the association is responsible for outside structural maintenance and i now have interior damage as a result of this, is the condo association responsible for repairs for this damage?

Yes, I used to be on the association for a condo. They are responsible because a roof is a common area. Their insurance should pay for it

Can you claim on your insurance for gutters?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Part of the guttering came down yesterday in high winds. Is this something that is covered on the insurance?

Probably yes - it will vary from policy to policy.

Depending on your excess I would doubt if it is worth claiming though.

Hail damage on my vehicle?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

I was caught driving in a hail storm a few weeks ago and was afraid to stop because visibility was very bad. When I finally got home and was able to look at my car I was surprised to see just a few dents. However, I have tons of paint chips all on the hood, side, top and back of my car. The insurance adjusted claims that hail cannot do this. They weren't there before the storm!!! I need to know if anyone has seen this before. Thanks for your help. 2009 with less than 14,ooo miles

in fact, i've taken claims for this. call a good paint shop and get an expert opinion (get a name) and call claims again, if they agree it's possible.

Will a bank repair a roof damaged due to winds with their insurance on an REO?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Just wondering if I were to get an offer accepted on an REO home with part of the roof damaged due to high winds, would it be feasible to ask the bank to fix it with their property insurance after inspection if I offer to pay their deductible?

The offer is at list right now, and is contingent on an inspection. I figure if I would rather pay their deductible than pay the whole thing myself, and the inconvenience of them filing a claim would be less than finding a new buyer or accepting a lower bid.

You will have to ask them, This sort of thing is not written in stone. You could ask the to fix it out right or to set asides funds in escrow for you do get in done.

I filed an insurance claim for hail damage on my roof and gutters. My Insurance company…?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

has estimated the damage at $9600 and issued me a check for $6800 and I will get an additional $1400 once the work is completed.

Question 1 - If I find a roofer to do the work for $6000, will my ins. still pay the $1400 once I send them the invoice?

Question 2 - If I decided I didn't want the gutters replaced and the total repairs would be $5000 for just the roof, would the insurance company have any problem with this? Would I still get the $1400? Thanks!!!

We do a lot of insurance work In West Virginia, the carrier must compensate you for your loss. If you find a better deal than the adjuster has estimated, they don't owe you more than your actual loss. Answer to ques. 1. Probably will not pay you the extra 1400 unless you send them a bogus invoice. You'll probably never get caught, but that's a conscience thing let alone fraud.
Answer to ques. 2. If you do not replace the gutters, but they are damaged, the company is still obligated to pay you for that portion of the loss but…if you don't replace them while they still have your file open, and say you replace them sometime later, and you have a subsequent claim, there is a good chance that they will not pay you for them since you chose not to do them initially and as far as they know, they would be paying you twice for the initial claim. If you do them later, be sure to save proof that you did, in fact, replace them at some time.
