How do I identify hail damage on shake shingle roof?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

We have scuff marks on our shake shingle roof from a hail storm, is this considered hail damage? The hail was large and sustained for about 10 minutes. We have these same scuff marks on our fence and dents in our metal patio cover as well as circular cuts in our hot tub cover. The insurance company is covering the metal patio roof and hot tub cover but said the scuffing although unsightly is not considered damage.

This is hail damage! It is counter-intuitive to believe that hail will damage the fence, thin metal patio cover and hot tub cover but not the roof. Hailstorm damage is similar to hundreds of mini-ball peen hammers hitting your roof. The hail hits the shakes and causes small indentations that 1) impair the ability to rapidly shed rain water causing the roof to remain wet longer and shorten the life expectancy. 2) crush wood fibers which weaken them and make them more susceptible to premature failure thus depriving you of life expectancy.
Your Adjustor is most likely under a company directive to cut their severity(dollars paid out on claims). I'd call the adjustor and politely go over the above. I would also buttress this discussion with a statement that the purpose of insurance is to restore you and your property to a pre-loss condition(Indemnity) and you did not have these scuffs prior to the hail storm. Hope this helps!

Why does wind damage coverage cost more for home insurance within 1500 to 2500 feet of the coast?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I was told that some companies won't even insure you in that locale?!

Are there more claims for that area for wind damage? I would think many inland areas get higher winds than some near the coast, especially high areas?

Because hurricanes are typically at their strongest - class 4 or 5 - right when they come in from the water. By the time they hit inland, they're down to class 1 or 2, or even tropical storm strength.

MOST insurance companies will not write a homeowners policy with wind coverage on a home within 5 miles to 20 miles of the coast.

The wind damage from hurricanes is about 25X the wind damage from tornados.

Can anyone recommend a home owner's insurance company that pays claims fairly when rebuilding home?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I have State Farm coverage on my home and auto. I filed a claim for hail damage and do not feel like I was treated fairly. All my other neighbors got new roofs, but they said my roof had nail damage and would not pay. I saw on the TV that State Farm and Allstate will go the extra mile to not pay fairly for a loss. I know there are better companies out there, just need some referrals.

This may not be directly answering your question, but I am in sure shock that you have "nail damage" to your roof since it takes NAILS to put a roof on. You may want to check into the denial of your claim a little more….and maybe have the Department of Insurance for your state check it out too!
Something just don't sound right!
…by the way, ERIE & Met Life are Great property and casualty companies to work with. See your INDEPENDENT agents instead of going direct.

Does homeowner insurance pay for a roof if the wind blew off shingles because of sun damage?

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I had a roofer come out and look at our roof after losing quite a few shingles in several places on the south facing slope of our home. The north side looks ok. He thought the shingles had
sun damage and that is why they blew off in the storm. He didn't go up on the roof to inspect. Just saw that the edges of the shingles curled and said it was from heat from the sun burning up the shingles. The roof was reshingled 15 years ago at the most. What is the deciding factors for insurance paying for a roof? We want to replace this one with a tin roof if we can. Also, can anyone tell me how to get a roofing company to bid the job? No one even answers their phones! The one guy that came out wouldn't give a bid because the house is too high and he can't keep workers so he wouldn't be able to get to it for a year. Our insurance co adjuster is 100 miiles away and doesn't want to drive down and if he did he wants us to supply him with a ladder that will go to the 3rd story.

don't mess with your insurance rates,if it's an old roof ,swallow the cost and get it done,i doubt that they will re-roof the whole house for a couple of shingles and it's going to cause your rates to go up.if you can't afford to replace it now ,go to a home center buy some shingle repair adhesive ,and glue them back down. or buy a bundle of similar color and replace a few.or hire somebody to do it………….tom

Can I paint asphalt on my roof. The roof looks fine but my home insurance says hail damage. Any options??

Monday, March 30th, 2009

Depends on the kind of roof that you have. There's a lot of different products that you can apply to the nonshingle, tile, etc., roofs. Go to one of the big-box stores and tell them about your situation and see what they suggest. It's not hard to do. You smear the stuff on with a squeegee. It can get hot has Hades up there, and if you're like me, you'll have almost as much on yourself as on the roof, so dress in old clothes and shoes and wear gloves. The hardest part for me is opening the bucket and stirring the goo.

Good point old john r made, what's the insurance company's beef..
